Vimeiro, Portugal. July 2019

Scroll down to content

On a very sunny Sunday (21 July) I went with a few friends to the small town of Vimeiro to watch the re-enactment of Battle of Vimeiro. The battle originally took place on the 21 August 1808, between the French and the Anglo-Portuguese army, commanded by the then British general, Arthur Wellesley, who in 1814 became the Duke of Wellington. The battle was decisive, putting an end to the first French invasion of Portugal. The re-enactment takes place all over the town, ending at the church.

After all the excitement of the battle, the guns and the cannons were extremely loud, we went for a delicious lunch of Caldeirada, fish stew, at a restaurant by the coast, where we we feasted on huge pots of fish and vegetables. A very different way to spend a Sunday in Portugal.
