My cruise round some of the islands of Croatia started in Dubrovnik. The old town, one of the best preserved walled towns in Europe, is surrounded by a wall, built in the 12th and 13th centuries, some areas of the wall are 6 meters thick. An earthquake in 1667 destroyed many of the buildings in the old town, during the Siege of Vienna in 1683 the old town was rebuilt, including the rows of Baroque town houses still standing today. The damage done to the city during the most recent war in 1991-1992, when the city resisted a nine month Serbian-Montenegrin siege, was quickly repaired. It was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1979.
